Washington.- Former US First Lady Michelle Obama called the demolition of the East Wing of the White House, ordered by President Donald Trump to build a huge ballroom, a “
national loss” this Tuesday.
“I think I felt a loss for us as a nation, but personally, you know… that’s not our home. It’s the people’s home,” Obama indicated during an interview for Jamie Kern Lima’s podcast, an entrepreneur in the makeup industry and a personal motivator recognized in the United States.
Obama, who was First Lady during President Barack Obama’s two terms from 2009 to 2017, shared her response to the removal of the annex of the presidential residence, adding that it personally hurts her because she questions whether there is a real appreciation for what this space represents for the country.
In October, Trump demolished the East Wing of the White House to make room for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom that, according to his calculations, will cost $300 million.
This space was known as the one assigned to the First Lady’s office and during the Obama Administration it was used to develop social assistance programs such as the one carried out in 2010 against childhood obesity.
Trump’s new ballroom has been at the center of controversy due to possible violations of the executive’s construction regulations and because it will be financed with money from businessmen and friends of the Republican who donated the money on the eve of the country’s 250th anniversary to be celebrated in 2026.
