Nine Los Alcarrizos councilors approve the handover of a protected area to businessmen
Los Alcarrizos. – Nine of the fifteen councilors of the municipality of Los Alcarrizos approved the delivery of more than two thousand square meters of a protected area to private entrepreneurs, for the installation of an industrial warehouse, despite the fact that the land is part of the Ozama River wetlands and is classified as an area of high ecological value.
The decision was supported by councilors Primitivo Núñez, Pablo Pérez, Anilda Quezada, Danisa Bierd, Jenderson Medina and Josué Bello, from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), as well as by Manuel Lazala, Benjamín Díaz and Manuel Medrano, from the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP).
The council members who approved the resolution alleged that the entrepreneurs have property titles. However, these documents are currently under investigation, which has intensified the controversy and generated legal and environmental questions.
Community and environmental organizations have expressed their rejection of the measure, warning that it is an action that compromises a fragile ecosystem, protected by national and international regulations. They have requested the urgent intervention of the Ministry of Environment, as well as the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Defense of the Environment, to stop what they call a serious attack against the natural heritage of the municipality.
