Santo Domingo.– The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Dr. Julio Landrón, led the groundbreaking ceremony this Thursday that marks the start of the first phase of the renovation of the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital, an intervention with an investment of nearly one billion pesos that seeks to transform one of the country’s main referral hospitals.
During the event, Landrón highlighted that the project is part of President Luis Abinader’s commitment to strengthening the Public Health Services Network and will allow the hospital to be equipped with modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art technology, and adequate spaces to offer more timely, safe, and humanized care.
“Today we are taking a transcendental step for the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital. After more than seven decades of providing services to patients, we are initiating a transformation that will guarantee a center with all the conditions for the medical and administrative staff to provide higher quality care,” he expressed.
The head of the SNS recalled that four months ago he announced the project during a tour of the hospital center and stated that the start of the work demonstrates the Government’s will to turn every commitment made to the population into reality.
“At that moment some doubted and thought that this project would not be possible. However, today we demonstrate that in the Government of President Luis Abinader there is will, planning, and commitment to the health of the people,” he stated.
Landrón explained that the comprehensive renovation of the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital will be carried out in three stages, allowing services to remain operational while the works are being executed.
The first phase includes the construction of a new emergency area with a capacity for more than 30 stretchers fully equipped with monitors and interconnected technology, as well as a modern trauma shock unit with four beds, triage area, emergency laboratory, imaging services with a CT scanner, X-ray equipment, sonographs, sonodoppler, hyperbaric chamber, and two operating rooms intended for emergency procedures.

The intervention also includes the refurbishment of the laboratory, consultation, surgery, and surgical intensive care areas, as well as the adaptation of the surroundings of the intervened areas, while the inpatient wards will be conditioned progressively.

The director of the SNS assured that the process has been carefully planned to guarantee the continuity of health services without affecting patient care.
He indicated that during the works, alternate spaces were enabled within the hospital and a referral system was designed to other centers of the Public Health Network, especially the Dr. Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, which has more than 250 beds, clinical-surgical and maternal-child hospitals, intensive care units, cardiovascular services, and high-tech diagnostic equipment.

“The transformation of the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital will not leave the population unprotected; on the contrary, it will strengthen the entire Public Health Network and ensure that citizens continue to receive the care they deserve,” he stated.
Landrón maintained that the start of the work represents much more than an infrastructure intervention.
“Today we begin a project that transcends concrete and steel. We are building hope, dignity, and better opportunities for those who most need an efficient healthcare system,” he expressed.
The doctor thanked the medical, nursing, bioanalysis, administrative, and support staff for their commitment and called for support in the transformation process of the hospital.
