U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated this Thursday that the recent seizure of an Iranian oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela is a direct blow to the finances of dictator Nicolás Maduro, whom she accused of trafficking drugs to North American territory.
During her intervention in a congressional hearing, Noem described the action as a “successful” operation led by the American president.
“It wasn’t simply a naval action; it was a strategic step to counter a regime that systematically floods our country with deadly drugs,” said Noem.
The official emphasized that the measure is part of a sustained effort to protect the internal security of the United States, framed within the policies of drug interdiction implemented since the administration of Donald Trump.
Noem highlighted the relationship between drug trafficking and Nicolás Maduro’s regime, and stated that since the beginning of Trump’s presidency, the amount of cocaine seized in maritime operations has been enough to put the lives of 177 million Americans at risk.
