Deputies: International Community has been “irresponsible” in the face of Haitian crisis, despite Abinader’s call

Santo Domingo.– Despite the repeated calls from President Luis Abinader at the United Nations General Assembly (UN) regarding the crisis in Haiti, deputies believe that the International Community has not shown real interest in stabilizing the neighboring nation. The deputy Pedro Martínez maintained that the problems in Haiti do not seem to be a priority for international organizations, assuring that, had there been the will, concrete measures would have already been taken.

“I think the International Community has no interest in solving Haiti’s problem. If it had wanted to resolve the Haitian issue in some way, it would have done so,” Martinez said. In the same vein, Representative Rogelio Alfonso Genao supported President Abinader’s position, but noted that international actors have acted with negligence. “The International Community must act on the Haitian issue and has been irresponsible. They always speak up when it is alleged that rights are violated, but they do not intervene when Haiti is going through a governance crisis where Haitian gangs rule,” pointed out Genao Lanza. On his part, Deputy Jorge Cavoli stated that there are sectors that benefit from the chaos in Haiti and highlighted the need to strengthen an international mission with greater support, as proposed by Abinader. “President Luis Abinader proposed the strengthening of the UN mission and called on the International Community. Logically, Kenya perhaps did not have the capacity on its own to address that situation, and what is appropriate is that more powerful nations join the search for a solution in which the Haitian people must participate,” added Cavoli. Abinader backs new international mission in Haiti During his speech at the UN, President Luis Abinader reiterated his support for the resolution promoted by the United States and Panama to transform the mission deployed in Haiti, whose mandate is about to expire, and urged that it be approved “without delay”. The leader thanked Kenya’s leadership and the financial support of the United States, as well as the collaboration of other countries in the initial deployment of the Multinational Security Mission (MSS). However, he warned that it has not achieved the expected results. Faced with this, he offered his support for the creation of a new Gang Suppression Force (GSF), with the expectation that it will contribute more effectively to the pacification of Haiti.
