Santo Domingo.- The alleged fraud at the National Health Insurance (Senasa), for which seven people are in preventive detention, represents a “national tragedy”, said former President of the country Leonel Fernández this Sunday.

“The Government was selling itself as honorable”, but “that virginity has been lost, because Senasa is not only an act of embezzlement and corruption, it is a national tragedy”, expressed the president of the Fuerza del Pueblo party during a Christmas gathering of his political organization in San Cristóbal.

The former head of state said that “it had never happened” in the country, that a government would organize “to create mega corruption that affects the life, that affects the health of the Dominican people.” It is, he added, “an action that will never be forgiven, because the well-being and life of the Dominican people have been attacked,” according to his statements reported in a statement released by the Fuerza del Pueblo.

Last Sunday, the Permanent Attention Office of the National District ordered 18 months of preventive prison for the former director of Senasa Santiago Hazim and six other people accused of committing a fraud of more than 15,000 million pesos in that state health risk insurer.

Furthermore, the court ordered house arrest for three other defendants.
