Cotuí, Sánchez Ramírez.– Members of the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA), in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, arrested a man identified for the illegal capture and commercialization of wild birds of the gallinule species in the municipality of Cotuí.
The arrest took place during a surveillance operation, in which authorities caught the individual while transporting several of these birds with the alleged intention of selling them.
During the intervention, several specimens of coots were recovered. However, the authorities reported that some had died due to the inadequate conditions in which they were being kept. The birds that survived received care from technical personnel before being reintroduced into their natural environment.

The SENPA indicated that the detainee will be presented before the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Defense of the Environment and Natural Resources, where he will face the corresponding process for the alleged violation of the legislation that protects the country’s wildlife and natural resources.
The authorities reiterated their call to the population to respect environmental regulations and denounced that the capture and commercialization of wild species represents a threat to biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems.
