Santo Domingo.– In the coastal neighborhood of Los Mameyes, where the sound of the sea accompanies daily life, Maximina Mercado and her daughter Selva Taveras wage a daily battle marked by strength and hope.
Selva María, 34 years old, has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, a condition that requires permanent care, medication, and a special diet. To support the household, Maximina handcrafts bracelets, necklaces, and ornaments that, more than simple pieces of costume jewelry, represent an act of dignity and struggle.
“When someone acquires one of our pieces, they carry with them part of our history and solidarity,” expresses Maximina, who clarifies that she is not looking for alms, but rather support through the purchase of her handicrafts.
Both hope that the support promised by the authorities will materialize soon and allow them to improve their quality of life.
