Santo Domingo.– The National Congress will open this Sunday, August 16, starting at 8:00 a.m., the Second Ordinary Legislature of the year 2026, a session in which the Senate of the Republic and the Chamber of Deputies will elect and swear in their respective Directive Boards for the 2026–2027 period.
Since this Friday, technical, decorative, protocol, and logistical details are being finalized for the start of the new legislative period, which will have as one of its main challenges the resumption of important initiatives that remained pending for review and approval.

Legislators are summoned starting at 8:00 in the morning. The summons establishes the dress code for the ceremony: white suit, tie, and black shoes for gentlemen, and white suit with closed black shoes for ladies.
The previous legislative period, corresponding to August 2025–July 2026, concluded with a balance of more than 400 initiatives approved, in addition to dozens of laws enacted, amidst an intense agenda carried out by the National Congress.

Pending reforms will set the agenda for Congress
Among the major issues that Congress must address during the new legislative session is labor reform, one of the main initiatives that remained pending from the previous period and regarding which there are significant expectations among the different sectors of society.
Another project of special importance will be the police reform, the knowledge of which is expected to give way to a broad process of discussion and consensus with the corresponding sectors.
The expectation is that the debate will allow for progress toward new regulations that establish clear criteria for the operation and transformation of the National Police, strengthen its institutional framework, and place the respect and guarantee of citizens’ rights, as well as the construction of an effective security policy in the Dominican Republic, as fundamental pillars.

With the installation of the new Boards of Directors and the formal opening of the legislature, senators and deputies will have ahead of them an agenda marked by structural reforms and pending projects that will concentrate a good part of the political and legislative debate over the coming months.
