He closed his speech in Spanish by predicting a lasting relationship of friendship between both nations
Santo Domingo. President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons reaffirmed this Tuesday her country’s commitment to a lasting alliance with the Dominican Republic, during a speech delivered before the joint meeting of the legislative chambers in the National Assembly Hall of the National Congress.
After being received with the corresponding honors, the president highlighted the relations of friendship and cooperation between both nations, noting that Suriname and the Dominican Republic share challenges and opportunities that can translate into mutual benefits for their peoples.
“Suriname reaffirms its commitment to a lasting alliance with the Dominican Republic and its people,” stated Geerlings-Simons, while advocating for the strengthening of bilateral ties in areas such as tourism, services, cultural exchange, and regional connectivity.
During his speech, he highlighted that both countries possess complementary economies and can work together to boost wealth creation and accelerate the development of strategic sectors.
The president also emphasized the importance of dialogue to promote peace, democracy, and the rule of law, as well as the need to strengthen regional cooperation in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Likewise, he called for the adoption of common positions regarding the effects of climate change, recalling that both Suriname and the Dominican Republic are particularly vulnerable to atmospheric phenomena.

Geerlings-Simons took the opportunity to invite Dominicans to visit Suriname, highlighting the direct air connection between both countries, available since April 2026.
“On behalf of the people of the Republic of Suriname, I thank you for your hospitality, your friendship, and your collaboration. May our nations continue to work together in solidarity, prosperity, and peace,” he stated at the conclusion of his speech.
The head of state concluded her speech with a message in Spanish of fraternity between both nations: “Long live the close friendship between the Republic of Suriname and the Dominican Republic!”.
The visit to the National Congress by President Geerlings-Simons takes place within the framework of the agenda completed in the country.

It is recalled that yesterday President Luis Abinader and his counterpart from the Republic of Suriname reaffirmed their ties of friendship with the signing of agreements and strategic alliances in the tourism, agricultural, security, and international organization support sectors.
The departure of the President of Suriname and her international delegation from Dominican soil is scheduled for 4:50 in the afternoon via the Las Américas “José Francisco Peña Gómez” International Airport.
