Three-year-old girl dies after choking on a lemongrass seed in Elías Piña

Elías Piña.— A three-year-old girl died after choking on a quenepa or limoncillo seed while playing in the yard of her home, located in the Juan Cano area, Elías Piña province, authorities reported this Tuesday.

The minor was identified as Joenny Adames Paniagua, who was rushed by her relatives to the Rosa Duarte hospital, where she arrived without vital signs.

According to a relative, the girl found a quenepa seed while playing and put it in her mouth. Upon realizing what had happened, her family members took her immediately to the health center, but the minor passed away during the journey.

The forensic doctor established the cause of death as asphyxia due to airway obstruction from the ingestion of a foreign body, as stated in the death certificate.

Following the incident, agents of the National Police and representatives of the Public Ministry went to the minor’s residence to carry out the corresponding procedures.

Subsequently, the authorities ordered the transfer of the body to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif), in Azua, for the corresponding legal procedures.

The case has caused sorrow among family members and residents of the community, following the accidental death of the minor.
