Yeni Reynoso asserts that crime must be combated by tracing its economy

Santo Domingo.- The Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, highlighted this Wednesday the importance of investigating and combating crime by analyzing the movements that criminal networks follow when mobilizing resources within the economy. Reynoso mentioned that most agencies and countries make the same mistake of investigating cases on a case-by-case basis, without conducting real investigations into criminal markets.

“It will always be much more difficult to be effective in combating a manifestation of criminality, working on it case by case, while, if it is worked as a criminal market, we are convinced that the results have been and will always be successful”, he emphasized in a note sent by his office. The prosecutor highlighted that Justice in the country has had successful cases when it has abandoned that traditional mechanism of working case by case and has been done based on what criminal markets are.

“The first thing we must understand is that crime operates at the level of the crime economy, very similar to how the legitimate economy works, and you don’t have to be an economist to know that the economy has principles, and one of the guiding principles of the economy is the law of supply and demand,” he indicated.

He explained that these principles have a symbiotic relationship, “there is more demand, there will be supply; demand increases, generally, supply increases; there is an oversupply, prices fall, there is scarcity, prices rise, economic rules that apply to criminal markets.” During his presentation, he pointed out that criminal organizations follow those market rules and that investigative agencies rarely establish how a particular criminal market works, which impacts all areas of security. “When we see any crime, no matter how small it may seem, the first hypothesis we must make is with which manifestation of organized crime this crime is related,” he affirmed.
