The president stated that the wars in Europe and the Middle East have put pressure on food and energy prices, and recalled that the Dominican Republic imports all of the fuel it consumes
New York.– President Luis Abinader advocated this Wednesday before the United Nations (UN) General Assembly for the de-escalation of international conflicts and a diplomatic solution to tensions, warning that wars taking place far from the Dominican Republic have direct consequences on the country’s economy and households.
During his speech at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the president pointed out that the Dominican Republic’s status as a small island developing state makes it particularly vulnerable to external events, especially international variations in food and energy prices.
“As a developing island state, the Dominican Republic knows vulnerability. Situations that occur very far from our shores can directly hit our families’ tables,” stated Abinader.
The head of State maintained that the wars in Europe and the Middle East have caused increases in international food and energy prices, the effects of which end up being transferred to economies like the Dominican one.

In that sense, he recalled that the Dominican Republic depends completely on imports to supply itself with fuel, which is why the country remains exposed to fluctuations in international markets.

“My country imports all of the fuel it consumes: we do not set those prices, they impact us without us being able to control them,” he stated.
Advocates for de-escalation and a diplomatic solution
Faced with that scenario, Abinader defended the need to reduce international tensions and guarantee conditions that allow for the preservation of trade and stability.
“That is why we advocate for de-escalation, for freedom of navigation, and for a diplomatic solution that prevents nuclear proliferation in the region,” the president stated.
Upon starting this part of his speech, Abinader stated that the current international scenario requires acting under three principles: “serenity, clarity and unity”.
He explained that serenity is required in the face of the profound transition the international order is undergoing; clarity regarding armed conflicts, the financial difficulties facing the United Nations, and the challenges derived from the accelerated technological advancement; and unity because, in his view, no country can respond to these problems alone.

The official theme of the 81st session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all”. The Assembly is presided over by Khalilur Rahman, of Bangladesh.
This year’s edition takes place in a context marked by armed conflicts, climate emergencies, inequalities, and challenges associated with new technologies, issues that are part of the priorities established for the session.
Abinader traveled to New York to lead the Dominican participation in the General Assembly, with an agenda that includes his address to the body, bilateral meetings, and encounters related to cooperation, development, artificial intelligence, trade, and investment.
