Brazil’s government has described its current diplomatic dispute with Argentina as the country’s most serious bilateral crisis since Brazil’s return to democracy.
Celso Amorim, Brazil’s former foreign minister and special adviser for international affairs to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, told CNN Brasil that the situation is “the biggest [crisis] since redemocratization,” an assessment reportedly shared by the presidential office and the Foreign Ministry.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira met Monday in Brasília with Ambassador Julio Bitelli to assess what officials described as a “very serious” situation. According to CNN Brasil, authorities have decided to keep Bitelli in Brazil while awaiting further actions from the Argentine government before considering additional diplomatic measures.
The current tensions have intensified following recent remarks by Argentine President Javier Milei, who sharply criticized Lula’s administration and directed insults at the Brazilian president and members of the country’s judiciary during an event in São Paulo. In response, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires for consultations and summoned Argentina’s ambassador to Brazil.
