Vatican City.– Pope Leo XVI stated this Monday that “a doctor should never allow themselves to decide, based on laboratory algorithms, the life of an embryo or an elderly person,” during an audience at the Jerome Lejeune Foundation, famous for its studies on Down syndrome.
n” “n“Medicine can never become the servant of a programmed death!”, asserted the American pontiff, who encouraged the foundation “for its commitment to life and human dignity, especially before public authorities”.
n” “nHe added that “Professor Lejeune was aware that, while technology can help medicine, it cannot, however, replace it”.
n” “nn” “n“Furthermore, he knew that technology can be used against medicine —which, by nature, is at the service of life—, as is proven when technology escapes all indispensable ethical control and calculations of efficiency, profitability, or utility prevail. However, the value of the person does not depend on what they do or produce,” he added.
n” “nHe praised the foundation because “they regularly intervene in social debates to protect every person in all circumstances of their existence”.
n” “nAnd he thanked them for “the training they provide to men and women who tomorrow will be able to contribute to guaranteeing a medical ethic at the service of human dignity and life”.
n” “nRobert Prevost recalled “the message and the work” of Jérôme Lejeune and asked “that it may inspire the courage of truth in the many young people and professionals who long for coherence; that it may help them to unite, without rigidity, reason and faith, word and deed, the absence of prejudice and the rejection of lies.”
