An image circulating on social media appears to show a person living on an elevated freeway structure in Los Angeles, with clothes hanging from a makeshift clothesline and personal belongings arranged around the area.
While homeless encampments beneath Los Angeles freeways have been documented in various parts of the city, the image stands out because the makeshift living space appears to be several feet above ground, on top of a concrete freeway structure.
The exact location and how long the person has been living there could not be confirmed from the image alone.
The situation also raises questions about the safety and legality of occupying such infrastructure. Los Angeles regulations allow restrictions on sleeping, lodging or storing personal property in certain areas near overpasses, bridges, freeway ramps and other infrastructure.
Caltrans has also described freeway-right-of-way encampments as a safety concern and operates programs to clear these areas while connecting people with housing and other services.
Los Angeles has separately carried out operations to move people from freeway encampments into temporary or permanent housing through programs including Inside Safe.
