A 31-year-old woman was rescued on Wednesday night, July 8, from a beam of the Brooklyn Bridge by the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and transported to Woodhull Hospital. The operation closed all Brooklyn-bound lanes during the evening rush hour and lasted for hours until officers managed to escort her to safety.
The authorities did not specify the reasons why he climbed onto the bridge.
What happened over the cables
Shortly before 7:40 p.m., a video captured by witnesses showed the woman walking on the steel cables from one of the bridge’s towers. The images circulated immediately on social media. A person crossing the bridge at that moment wrote: “We were crossing the Brooklyn Bridge when we encountered this person who had climbed up. I hope everything ended well,” as reported by El Diario NY.

The NYPD received the report around 8 p.m., according to Fox 5 NY. Authorities established a dialogue with the woman for hours. Officers from the Emergency Service Unit also climbed the cables in search of her, and the department reported that the person was “emotionally disturbed.”

After a medical evaluation, security brought her down. The woman was taken into custody late at night, as reported by El Diario NY. Her identity was not released.
The closure and its impact on traffic
The eastbound lanes—from Manhattan toward Brooklyn—remained closed during the operation. Around 10 p.m., the police confirmed their reopening, according to NY Post and El Diario NY.

Wednesday’s incident is not the first of its kind. In 2022, a man climbed the cables of the same bridge and paralyzed morning rush hour traffic for approximately 90 minutes, according to the NY Post. In May 2020, another climber scaled the bridge and halted traffic until being detained by police, according to El Diario NY.

The July 8th episode also comes at a time of increased public attention toward these types of actions in the city. The previous week, the Russian couple Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus—known for illegally climbing skyscrapers without safety equipment—were arrested after climbing to the top of the Empire State Building.
This is a separate incident, but it is part of the same trend of unauthorized escalations on iconic structures in New York.
