Bogotá .- Colombia remembered this Tuesday with a mass and other activities the first anniversary of the death of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who passed away on August 11, 2025, two months after being seriously wounded in an attack with two gunshots to the head when he was beginning his campaign for this year’s presidential elections.
María Claudia Tarazona, widow of Miguel Uribe, organized the mass held at the Primatial Cathedral of Bogotá, which was attended by family, friends, and acquaintances. Through tears, the woman recalled the 65 days she spent by Uribe’s side at the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, where he had been admitted since the attack on June 7th
«The purpose of my life today is love», stated Tarazona during the mass, in which she assured that she has decided to transform the pain of her husband’s death into a way of life based on love, goodness, and the absence of hatred and resentment.
Uribe Turbay died at 39 years old and for the attack two individuals were sentenced to more than 20 years in prison, while four others accepted their responsibility, including the 15-year-old teenager who shot him.
Tributes and greetings on the anniversary
The senator’s father, Miguel Uribe Londoño, also called for a mass at the La Inmaculada Concepción parish in Bogotá and announced that he will unveil a monument in his honor in the park where he was murdered.

“You left us your ideas, your principles, your courage, and a legacy that no one will be able to erase,” wrote his father in a message on X in which he noted that he will be “always faithful” to his legacy.
The president of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, who is touring the areas affected by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the country on Monday, also remembered the politician, who died when he was beginning his career as a presidential hopeful for the right-wing Democratic Center party.

The death of the senator, grandson of former Liberal president Julio César Turbay Ayala (1978-1982), became a symbol of the recent political violence in Colombia, which worsened during the last electoral campaign.
