Launch the Educational Route for the energy and mining sector at the FILSD 2025

Santo Domingo. – The Ministry of Energy and Mines launched the Educational Route during the Santo Domingo 2025 International Book Fair (FILSD 2025), a program that will impact more than 600 students from the public education system with talks, guided tours, and immersive experiences on energy, mining, and sustainability. The inaugural day featured the participation of 60 students from the Juan de los Santos Polytechnic, who received a talk on renewable energies given by Wáscar Liriano, director of Conventional Energy of the ministry. He explained the advantages of generating electricity through the sun, water, and wind, highlighting that these sources do not produce polluting emissions, do not depend on fossil fuels, and are more affordable. In addition, the students visited the inter-institutional stand installed on the esplanade of the Dominican Man Museum, where they learned interactively about the energy and mining sectors of the country, the operation of photovoltaic, wind and hydroelectric parks, as well as the importance of biomass in energy diversification. They were also introduced to the educational dynamics of the Renewable Energy Theme Park (PTER), designed to promote learning around the energy transition. Throughout the fair, students from different educational centers will participate in conferences, panels, and activities organized by institutions attached to the MEM, including Egehid, ETED, CUED, CNE, SIE, Punta Catalina, the SGN, and the General Directorate of Mining. As a central part of the agenda, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, will give the keynote conference “Energy that transforms, knowledge that illuminates: the sustainable future of the Dominican Republic”, on Tuesday, September 30 at 6:00 p.m., in the Juan Bosch Auditorium of the National Library. With this program, Energy and Mines, as well as related institutions, reaffirm the commitment to bring scientific and technical knowledge to Dominican youth, fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible use of natural resources.

Training agenda

Throughout the FILSD 2025, students from educational centers such as the Juan de los Santos polytechnic, Félix María Ruiz, Domingo Savio Fe y Alegría and Aragón, Trina Moya de Vásquez High School, Fabio Amable Moya Arts Center, Celina Pillier School and the Santa Rosa Institute for the Deaf, will participate in an extensive program of activities. The Educational Route agenda will continue on Monday, September 29 at 10:45 in the morning, when Edith Paulino, director of Programs and Dissemination of Nuclear Energy of the Vice Ministry of Nuclear Energy, will offer the conference “Nuclear Energy” in the Identity and Citizenship Pavilion, History and Geography Auditorium. That same day, at 2:00 PM, Bradley Berroa will speak on “Energy efficiency and consequences of electrical fraud”, in the Amelia Francasci Pavilion of the Museum of Modern Art, in an activity organized by the Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED). On Tuesday the 30th, at 2:00 PM, the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EGEHID) will hold the talk “Water, energy and life” in the Authors’ Pavilion of the Maniquí. That same day, at 6:00 p.m., the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, will present the keynote conference “Energy that transforms, knowledge that illuminates: the sustainable future of the Dominican Republic”, in the Juan Bosch Auditorium of the National Library. The activities will continue on Wednesday, October 1st at 2:00 PM, when the National Energy Commission (CNE) presents the topic “Energy efficiency and rational use of energy” in the Identity and Citizenship Pavilion, with the participation of students from the Celina Pillier School and the Fabio Amable Moya Arts Center. Minutes later, at 2:45 p.m., engineer Nicolás Azcona, from the National Geological Service (SGN), will give the conference “Seismic threat, floods and physical vulnerability in the coastal zone of Barahona”, in the same space. On Thursday, October 2nd, at 2:00 PM, the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE) will share the talk “I am Energy”, led by Tamara Navarro, head of Social Responsibility, in the History and Geography Auditorium of the Identity and Citizenship Pavilion. Later, the Mining Promotion Department will address the topic “Artisanal mining: larimar and amber” in the Sala de Letras of the Natural History Museum. The programming will close on Friday, October 3, at 9:00 a.m., with the talk “Mining in your life”, by Rolando Muñoz, general director of Mining, and Domingo Amparo. This activity will bring together students from the Instituto Ayuda al Sordo Santa Rosa in the Citizen Identity Pavilion.
