“My little girl used to call me every day”: father of 5-year-old girl burned to death in Gualey

Santo Domingo. – The father of the 5-year-old girl who died in the fire that occurred in the Gualey sector Gualey last night, Sunday, recounted how he received the news while on his way to church, without imagining that hours before he had left his daughter safe and sound at home. “I was there for the church. It was from the church that they called me and we went there right away. When I arrived there were a lot of people and the only thing they were saying was that the house had burned down,” he expressed. With a choked voice, she confessed that what hurts her the most is the daily memory of her daughter, with whom she had a very close relationship.

“I loved that girl very much. She always called me when I was working to bring her milk, potatoes, things that she liked. I always bought them for her. That hurts me a lot,” he said, visibly affected. The father also spoke about the emotional situation of the 72-year-old grandmother who was caring for the girls and who was seriously injured in the fire, noting that she has not yet been informed of the death of the minors. “She doesn’t know the girls passed away. She is burned and asks all the time: ‘Where is the girl? Where is so-and-so?’ She cares more about them than herself,” he explained. He indicated that, on medical advice and to avoid a greater impact on his health, the family has decided not to tell him the truth for the moment. “Nothing can be said to her yet, because she gets upset. When she comes to herself, it will be very hard,” she expressed. The man confirmed that, for work reasons, they used to leave the minor in the care of the woman during the day, along with the 7-year-old girl, who usually helped take care of her younger cousin. “It was daytime. When I left work I was with them. Yesterday we left for church around seven and it was there that they called me,” she recalled. So far, the bodies of the girls have not been handed over to their families, because the corresponding legal procedures are still being carried out. The father explained that some personal documents were burned in the fire, which has delayed the process. Neighbors in the area have expressed deep consternation over the tragedy, highlighting the affection they felt for the family and the impact the event has had on the entire community.
