Spain.– The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, visited the autonomous city of Ceuta, which borders Morocco, this Friday to address the migration crisis recorded in recent days. During his tour, he described the massive influx of migrants as a “violation of the country’s territorial integrity.”
“What happened is an attack, a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity,” the leader declared to the media.
According to the authorities, thousands of irregular migrants entered Ceuta’s territory, mainly by swimming and also by land, which created a situation of pressure on a city with just over 80,000 inhabitants.
After expressing his solidarity with the residents of Ceuta, Sánchez condemned what happened and assured that the Government will use all the resources of the State to guarantee security and coexistence.
“It deserves all our reproach, all our condemnation, at the strongest possible level,” he stated.
Blame the mafias
The Spanish president maintained that, after analyzing the situation and speaking with Moroccan authorities, the Executive considers that the mafias dedicated to human trafficking had interpreted in a self-serving manner a Supreme Court ruling related to the return of migrants who enter Spanish territory by sea.
“It seems that this interpretation by the Supreme Court has spread rapidly among human trafficking networks and has caused an avalanche,” he noted.
Sánchez recalled that, in recent years, Spain had managed to consistently reduce the arrival of irregular migrants through points such as Ceuta, Melilla, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands.

Likewise, he reported that the Government reinforced the presence of the Civil Guard and the National Police with 400 additional agents, in addition to the deployment of the Armed Forces, while procedures for the repatriation of migrants in an irregular situation are being streamlined.
