Santo Domingo.— Political figures highlighted the importance of the book “1994 Crisis; a turning point in politics“, by engineer and political leader Héctor Rodríguez Pimentel, released during an event in which the need to preserve and analyze the events that have marked the country’s political history was highlighted.
The work addresses, from Rodriguez Pimentel’s experience as a senator, the events that followed the 1994 presidential elections, as well as the reforms that subsequently transformed the Dominican political system.
The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, considered that in order to understand the present and project the future, it is necessary to know the history and analyze the processes that have defined the country’s political and economic evolution.
“To be able to execute the present and, above all, the future, one must understand history well,” he stated, highlighting that the 1994 crisis represented a turning point for Dominican politics, due to the reforms that took place from that moment on.
He pointed out as one of the main changes the establishment of the second electoral round under the 50% plus one system, a mechanism that has governed Dominican presidential processes ever since.

Santos also recalled other reforms implemented at the beginning of the 1990s, including the 1990 tariff reform and the 1992 tax and labor reforms, which, as he explained, had significant effects on the country’s subsequent development.
For his part, the Minister of Justice, Antoliano Peralta, described the publication as a necessary work, considering that it gathers little-known aspects of the political events of 1994.
“It is a necessary book because, in accordance with what I heard from the author and the panelists, there are a series of inner details of those events that the general public does not know and this is a good opportunity,” expressed Peralta.
While the former Minister of Women, Janet Camilo, maintained that the work presents a narrative about an event that transformed the political and social life of the country.

Camilo attributed a fundamental role in that process to the leaders Joaquín Balaguer and José Francisco Peña Gómez, who, in his view, placed the interests of the nation above their own personal interests.
“These events were due to two fundamental figures, who were Joaquín Balaguer and José Francisco Peña Gómez, who put the nation above their own interests,” stated the lawyer.
Meanwhile, reformist leader Johnny Jones highlighted the historical significance of the 1994 political crisis and considered that episode to have marked a turning point in the evolution of democracy and the Dominican political system.
Jones stated that the presentations made during the launch allowed for a deeper understanding of the impact those events had on the country’s institutional life.
The launch of “1994 Crisis; a turning point in politics” brought together representatives from different sectors, who agreed on the importance of reviewing historical processes to understand the transformations that Dominican democracy and institutions have undergone.
