ANKARA.- U.S. President Donald Trump said this Wednesday that Spain is “a lost cause” and called for cutting “all trade” with the country, “including visits,” during an appearance alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, in the framework of the summit being held in Ankara.
“Spain is a terrible NATO partner. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want to have anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits (…) We don’t want to have anything to do with them,” said Trump.
According to the American president, the deal must be cut “immediately” because in Spain “there is no remedy, they are bad people.” He added that although there are some “more cases” of countries in NATO with an attitude he regrets, Spain “in particular” is among the group of those who “show themselves to be hostile.”
“They make a lot of money at our expense, and we are going to make them make much less. I don’t want to do business with them,” Trump asserted.
“We’ll see how long their hostility lasts when they call saying: ‘Please, please, we want to trade with you, sir,'” he added.

In the same vein of criticism, Trump reiterated that he is not happy with NATO “because of what they did with Greenland” and the fact that “they didn’t want to help us with the main state sponsor of terrorism: Iran.”
Although he clarified, “to be fair,” that he did not address that matter previously with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

“I think that if I had done it, maybe things would have been different, although in reality we didn’t need help, but I was testing the situation. I wanted to see if they would be there or not, and the answer was what it was,” he indicated.
The American president indicated that, in that context, he spoke with Germany, with France, with the United Kingdom, with Italy, but that he did not speak with Spain because “it is a lost cause.”
“We no longer want to do commercial business with Spain. By the way, it was lucky to have cut that relationship,” said Trump.
According to the American president, “they are beyond help, they are bad people.” “They know they have everyone else going, paying and working in Spain,” he added.
Although “there is some other case, in Spain in particular they do it openly, with hostility; we will see how long that hostility lasts for them when they call and say: Please, please, we want to trade with you, sir; we want to trade with you, sir,” he said, feigning a pleading tone.
