Santo Domingo.- The executive president of the National Council for Children and Adolescents (Conani), Ligia Pérez Peña, assured this Tuesday that the San Antonio de Guerra shelter where a 14-year-old adolescent under the institution’s care died, had the personnel and supervision mechanisms in place at the time the incident occurred.
During an interview on the television program Despierta con CDN, the official explained that, after the tragedy occurred, the entity immediately activated the corresponding protocols and notified the Public Prosecutor’s Office to initiate the relevant investigations.
Pérez Peña indicated that the minor was housed in a room with 29 other adolescents and that the area was under the surveillance of two guides and a military guard, in accordance with the provisions that regulate the operation of the shelters managed by Conani.

The head of the institution indicated that the circumstances of the death are being investigated by the competent authorities and reiterated Conani’s willingness to collaborate with the process to clarify what happened.
The case has generated public attention and questions regarding safety conditions in state foster homes, while authorities advance in their investigations to determine the corresponding responsibilities.
