Santo Domingo.– The leader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Geanilda Vásquez, reacted this Thursday to the decision of Senator Antonio Taveras to leave the officialist organization and assume an independent position in the Senate of the Republic.
When approached by journalists prior to the international seminar “Social Public Policies,” Vásquez described the legislator as “a rebel without a cause” and asserted that he has historically maintained positions far from party discipline.
“Look, Taveras, my relative, my townsman, is a rebel without a cause,” the political leader expressed, while recalling that the senator was always linked to social struggles and movements like the Green March.
As he explained, Taveras has “very innovative” ideas, but has never fully adapted to the traditional schemes of political parties.
“Political parties have mystique, they have schemes, they have discipline. Sometimes we don’t like what happens, but democratic centralism obliges that, if you expose a position within an organization and lose, you have to assume the party’s position,” he stated.

Geanilda Vásquez maintained that within political organizations, decisions must often be defended, even if some leaders do not necessarily agree with them.
“¿How many times have we had positions we don’t like and have to assume them? Then you see me in a speech defending it because the party has already adopted it,” he indicated.
The leader insisted that “democratic centralism” is fundamental to preserve the institutionality and cohesion of political parties.

Vásquez’s statements come after Antonio Taveras announced during the ordinary session of the Senate that he was leaving the PRM to serve as an independent senator, alleging differences with the direction the organization has taken and questioning whether the Government has fulfilled the causes that drove the political change in the country.
“Are we fulfilling the causes that the citizenry demanded in the streets?” the legislator expressed when justifying his decision.
