Santiago.- A 24-year-old young mother reported that she nearly lost her life after being allegedly attacked with machetes and stabs by her former romantic partner during the Mother’s Day celebration in the Baracoa sector of this city, in a new episode of violence that, she claims, has been repeated for years despite the existence of at least five arrest warrants against the aggressor.
The victim, Taischa Taveras, accused Maberi del Orbe, the father of her two children, of causing wounds to her face, left thigh, and a buttock, after intercepting and violently attacking her when she was trying to retrieve a wallet that contained money intended for the purchase of milk for one of her children
“He has already tried to kill me several times. I am afraid that one day he will carry out his threats and take my life,” the young woman declared, while waiting for medical attention at the José María Cabral y Báez Regional University Hospital.

According to her account, the aggressor showed up early at her home supposedly to visit the son they have in common. Hours later, when she was preparing to spend time with family for Mother’s Day, he snatched her purse and fled the scene. When she demanded her belongings back, the man allegedly pulled out a machete and lunged at her.

The woman stated that she has lived in a constant state of terror, as she fears encountering her ex-partner anywhere. She claims that the threats and assaults have been so frequent that they have prevented her from working, leading a normal life, and providing stability for her children.
“I cannot be anywhere in peace. I cannot work to support my children or live in a stable home because I am always afraid that he will show up and attack me,” she expressed through tears.
Taveras also denounced that, despite the complaints and court orders issued against her aggressor, the measures adopted so far have failed to stop the cycle of violence she claims to have been facing for years.

The case brings back to the table the complaints of victims of gender-based violence who demand a more effective response from the authorities regarding repeat offenders, especially when there is a history of threats, previous attacks, and pending arrest warrants.
While recovering from the injuries sustained, the young mother asserts that her greatest fear is becoming just another statistic of the femicides that shake the Dominican Republic every year.
“Are you going to wait for me to be killed before you act?”, the victim questioned while requesting urgent protection for herself and her children.
