Madrid.- King Felipe VI of Spain reaffirmed this Thursday Spain’s commitment of solidarity with the recovery of Venezuela following the two earthquakes that struck the country a week ago, as well as with a future in which “Venezuelans decide for themselves, freely and democratically.”
This was pointed out by the monarch at the ‘ABC’ Journalism Awards ceremony, where he expressed his pain and “immense sorrow” regarding what happened in the South American country.

“From here, we send our affection and our embrace to the Venezuelan people, to accompany their mourning and reaffirm our solidarity commitment to their recovery and also, to the future that Venezuelans decide for themselves, freely and democratically,” he stressed.
Felipe VI, together with his wife, Queen Letizia, presided over the awards ceremony for the aforementioned journalistic prizes, whose most prominent award, the Mariano de Cavia, was granted in this edition to the Venezuelan living in Spain Karina Sainz Borgo, while the Luca de Tena went to the Spaniards Victor-M. Amela, Ima Sanchís and Lluís Amiguet, and the Mingote, to the Spanish duo of graphic humorists Gallego & Rey (José María Gallego and Julio Rey).

In his speech, the monarch explained that it is thanks to journalism and the media that citizens know “about the near and the far, about the good and the bad,” and assured that whoever chooses the profession of journalist “also chooses a vocation,” a “way of looking at the world with curiosity and a critical spirit; of approaching reality with intellectual freedom, respect for the truth of the facts, and the responsibility of bearing witness to their time.”

That is why he highlighted that the best journalism is not measured solely by the news that is published, “but also by the mark it leaves behind.”
Felipe VI referred to the award winners in this edition of the awards that the newspaper ‘ABC’ has been granting for 106 years and highlighted their work.

“Each of these awards distinguishes a different way of approaching reality: the written word, judgment, and the image. Three different ways of understanding it and telling it which, nevertheless, pursue the same purpose: to help us better understand the world around us and, in doing so, understand ourselves as well,” the king indicated.
The monarch insisted that it is not just about recounting reality, but about “interpreting it with honesty, listening to it with respect, and looking at it with the necessary freedom to share it with others.”
