The Big Apple’s Department of Health urges New Yorkers to resume the practice of getting routine tests

“We know that sexually transmitted infections have continued during the Covid-19 public health emergency, however, many New Yorkers did not undergo routine testing last year,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi.

He/she recalled the importance of also getting tested for HIV and other sexual health care services.

In a statement, authorities reminded that chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are common and curable; however, if left untreated, they can cause lasting health effects, such as infertility and chronic pelvic pain. Syphilis can cause vision and hearing loss, dementia, and paralysis.

People can seek help at DOHMH Sexual Health Clinics on a walk-in basis, at low cost, or at no cost for individuals over 12 years of age.
