Madrid.- The decision of a judge to withdraw the passport and open an oral trial against Begoña Gómez, wife of the Spanish Chief Executive, Pedro Sánchez, confirms the persecution, obsession, and disproportion of this magistrate, according to sources from the Moncloa Palace, seat of the Government Presidency, told EFE.

They asserted that the investigation of the case by judge Juan Carlos Peinado lacks any legal basis and is driven solely by political motives.

In a court order released this Saturday, Peinado sends Gómez to trial by jury for four crimes and sets as precautionary measures the withdrawal of his passport, prohibits him from leaving the national territory, and imposes a biweekly appearance at the court.

Moncloa sources also highlight Judge Peinado’s words in the court order referring to the security force agents who accompany and escort Begoña Gómez.

“What there is no doubt about -writes the judge- is that those agents at a given moment can, either on their own initiative or following orders from their hierarchical superiors, be precisely those who collaborate in the action or actions that are carried out, to facilitate that escape, which makes it impossible for the accused to be at the disposal of justice”.

According to sources, these words accusing the Police and saying that the officers could be collaborating in an alleged escape are “another example of the magistrate’s absurdity.”

Peinado opened an oral trial with a popular jury against Gómez for influence peddling, corruption in business in the private sector between individuals, misappropriation, and embezzlement of public funds, in relation to a public chair at the Complutense University of Madrid that she co-directed.

It also indicts his advisor Cristina Álvarez for the same crimes and the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés for influence peddling and corruption in business in the private sector between individuals.
