The Colombian Geological Service confirmed this Monday that the 7.4 magnitude earthquake recorded in the last few hours in the South American country was one of the strongest episodes perceived in the last decade.
“It is the strongest earthquake that has been felt in the last decade in the country, and for that area there is a history of earthquakes; particularly, on November 23, 1979, there was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake,” stated the director of the SGC, Julio Fierro Morales.

Fierro Morales specified that so far two aftershocks have been recorded, one with a magnitude of 2.8 and another of 4.8 “which was felt recently.” “There is damage that we are aware of, not through official channels but through social media, particularly in the cities of Manizales and Pereira,” he added.
The seismic movement was also felt in Ecuador, Panama, Ecuador and Venezuela, a country that suffered a devastating seismic double on June 24th.

“We will continue to report (…) and we recommend that the population remain calm and receive information from official channels,” the official stressed.
This Monday morning, the strong earthquake with its epicenter in Chocó and a depth of 88 kilometers shook the entire country, leaving behind severe material damage and shocking images shared on social media.
