MONTREAL, Canada. – Briton George Russell won Saturday’s sprint race of the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix, held at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, on a historic day for Formula 1 as this format was held for the first time on Canadian soil.
The Mercedes driver dominated the race with authority and maintained a consistent pace from the start to the checkered flag to secure his first sprint victory of the season. Russell finished ahead of his compatriot Lando Norris, of McLaren, while the Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third position.
With this result, Mercedes reaffirms its competitive growth in the championship and Russell adds the third sprint victory of the 2026 calendar, which includes a total of six short races during the season.
Antonelli, current leader of the World Championship, once again scored important points to stay at the top of the general classification, also consolidating the excellent collective performance of the German team.
The session did not leave good news for the Spanish drivers. Carlos Sainz Jr. finished outside the points zone after finishing tenth, while Fernando Alonso abandoned the competition before completing the course.
