Santo Domingo. The delegations of Guyana and Venezuela will pay tribute to the victims of the recent tragedies that occurred in their countries during the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, after Centro Caribe Sports approved special requests submitted by both Olympic committees.

The president of Centro Caribe Sports, Luis Mejía Oviedo, reported that the organization authorized the Guyanese flag to remain at half-mast during official acts, in solidarity with the Guyanese people following the shipwreck of the ferry MV Barima.
The Government of Guyana decreed three days of national mourning, from July 22 to 24, for the tragedy that occurred on July 18, which left 27 dead, 69 survivors, and 83 missing persons, according to official figures.
Likewise, the request from the Venezuelan Olympic Committee for its delegation to wear a black ribbon on their uniforms was approved, as a sign of mourning for the victims of the double earthquake recorded on June 24 in La Guaira state.
According to the reports presented, the natural disaster caused the death of more than 5,000 people and affected more than 128,000 families.
The requests were reviewed and endorsed during the Centro Caribe Sports Assembly held this Wednesday in Santo Domingo, where the delegates of the member countries approved both initiatives.
Luis Mejía Oviedo highlighted that these actions represent a gesture of respect and solidarity from the regional sports movement with the affected nations, reaffirming the values of unity and brotherhood promoted by the Central American and Caribbean Games.
