Santo Domingo.- The Héctor J. Díaz Chess Club, in collaboration with Ajedrez Picante, inaugurated this Saturday the 2025 Children’s and Youth Classic Chess Tournament, dedicated to engineer Néstor Matos, director of the Dominican Institute for Quality (INDOCAL), in recognition of his outstanding career as a chess player and for his valuable contributions to the development of chess in the Dominican Republic.
During the opening ceremony, Matos thanked for the distinction and expressed his firm support for the practice of the “sport science”, highlighting that chess is “the best gym for the mind”, as it stimulates creativity, strengthens analytical thinking and provides multiple benefits to the mental and emotional health of children and young people.

This dedication is a just recognition of his commitment to this sport», affirmed Benjamín Henríquez, CEO of Ajedrez Picante. For his part, Presley Nova valued the enthusiastic children’s participation and highlighted the important support of the parents.
The championship, which takes place from June 20 to 29 at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library (BNPHU), serves as a qualifying event for the 2025 Central American and Caribbean School Championship.
Players from different provinces of the country participate in six categories: U7, U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17. Each champion will get a full pass to the international tournament to be held in Punta Cana from October 13 to 19, including registration, accommodation, food and technical support throughout the event.
