Santo Domingo.– The decision by the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) to deny the registration of shortstop Wander Franco for the national baseball team that will compete in the 2026 Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games has sparked mixed opinions among the public, who are debating between the player’s athletic talent and the message it represents for the country.
During a public consultation conducted by this media outlet, several interviewees considered that Franco should receive a new opportunity, arguing that he received a judicial pardon that exempted him from serving a prison sentence and that his quality as a player could significantly strengthen the Dominican team.
“It was unfair because they took him to court and forgave him. He could contribute a lot to the team because he is a great ballplayer,” opined Máximo Tolentino.
Along the same lines, Marcos, another person consulted, maintained that people deserve a second chance. “Everyone makes a mistake and they must be given the opportunity to change. It is indisputable that he could contribute a lot to the national team,” he expressed.

However, other citizens supported the Olympic Committee’s decision, considering that an athlete who represents the country must also project values on and off the field.
“He may be an excellent ballplayer, but representing the Dominican Republic implies much more. Having such a negative track record would not be convenient for games of that magnitude,” stated Diego García.
Salvador Velázquez agreed that, although Franco possesses the athletic conditions to join the team, his participation could generate criticism toward the Dominican delegation. “He has a lot to contribute, but I cannot agree with what he did. They will always point him out and that would end up affecting the country’s image,” he stated.
Other citizens, like Richard, defended the sports organization’s stance, understanding that the measure sends a message of responsibility to the new generations. “We must send a message to the youth. He is an adult and must face the consequences of his actions,” he maintained.
The controversy arises after the Dominican Olympic Committee rejected the request from the Dominican Baseball Federation to include Wander Franco on the national team roster that will participate in the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. The organization argued that the decision responds to ethical and institutional criteria linked to the country’s representation in international competitions.
