Mexico.– The Dominican journalist and diplomat Juan Bolívar Díaz received the Flores Magón Award, a distinction granted in Mexico to prominent figures for their defense of freedom of expression and human rights.
Díaz, current ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Mexico, was recognized alongside nine other Mexican personalities during a ceremony held this Wednesday, August 5, at the auditorium of the National Academy of History and Geography of Mexico.
The distinction recognizes his five decades of journalistic practice and his trajectory in defense of civil liberties, human rights, and freedom of expression in the Dominican Republic.
The Flores Magón Award was established in the year 2000 by the magazine Proyección Económica, in coordination with journalist associations, to honor the memory of the Mexican journalist and revolutionary Ricardo Flores Magón, considered one of the precursors of the Mexican Revolution for his opposition, through journalism, to the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz.
The candidacy of Juan Bolívar Díaz was proposed by the magazine’s director and president of the Mexican Institute of Sciences and Humanities, Raúl Gómez Espinosa, who highlighted the extensive career of the Dominican communicator.

During the event, a summary of his career as a journalist, social leader, academic, and diplomat was read. It was also highlighted that Díaz graduated in 1967 from the Carlos Septién García School of Journalism in Mexico City, an institution founded in 1949 and considered one of the first academies specializing in journalism in the region.

Díaz was the first of the ten awardees to receive the distinction. Among the other honorees were communicators, lawyers, a film director, and social leaders from Mexico City and the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, for their contributions to the defense of freedom of expression.
The Flores Magón Award consists of a bronze statuette and a parchment, and it seeks to preserve the memory of the Mexican journalist, whose work was marked by the defense of freedoms and the criticism of power.

The ceremony brought together representatives from professional organizations, academic institutions, media outlets, and entities of Mexican civil society.
After receiving the recognition, Juan Bolívar Díaz expressed his gratitude for the distinction and for the recognition from his Mexican colleagues. The ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Ada Wiscovitch.
