Santo Domingo.- The Duarte Institute reported this Saturday on legal actions it will initiate in San Francisco de Macorís, due to the improper use of the national flag on the coffin of a man identified as Luis Miguel Martínez Agramonte, alias “El Bobo”.
The president of the entity, Wilson Gómez Ramírez, explained that an act of outrage was committed against one of the main national symbols, for which he will proceed to formally empower the district attorney of the city’s judicial district, magistrate Smaily Yamel Rodríguez, and the commander of the Northeast department of the National Police, General Dionisio Natera Melenciano.
He specified that the public prosecutor’s office and the law enforcement agency must investigate and determine responsibilities regarding the incident that occurred at the funeral of Martínez Agramonte.

He maintained that the deceased did not meet the conditions established by Law 210-19 regarding the use of National Symbols to receive a posthumous tribute with the national flag, and criticized the actions of the police officers present at the funeral, alleging that they did not intervene despite it being, as he claimed, a flagrant offense. In that sense, he expressed his expectation that the authorities act quickly and apply exemplary sanctions against those responsible.
The leader of the Duartianos recalled that article 19 of that legislation limits this privilege to citizens who have held relevant public positions or who have distinguished themselves in areas such as the arts, education, the military, sports, culture, or patriotism, while also maintaining conduct considered worthy of such recognition.
Likewise, Gómez Ramírez warned that article 25 of the aforementioned regulation classifies as a crime covering the coffin of a person who does not meet those requirements with the national flag, while article 38 establishes penalties of between one and three months in prison, in addition to fines of five to twenty minimum wages of the public sector for those who commit that violation.

The burial of Luis Miguel Martínez Agramonte, known as “El Bobo,” sparked controversy after his coffin was covered with the national flag during the funeral services held in San Francisco de Macorís. Family and friends bid farewell to the 21-year-old amidst displays of grief and recognition, in an act that subsequently prompted questions regarding the use of one of the main national symbols.
Martínez Agramonte died following an operation by National Police agents in the Vista al Valle sector. While authorities maintain that he was killed during an alleged armed confrontation, family members reject that version and state that the young man had left behind illicit activities to dedicate himself to construction work and support his son.
