Santo Domingo. – The Senate of the Republic will review this Wednesday the bill for the reform of the National Police, an initiative that seeks to provide the institution with a new legal framework to strengthen its transformation, modernize its operation, and establish new rules regarding the use of force.
The piece will be read in its entirety during the session, as reported by the President of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos.
The project reaches the chamber after several months of study by a special commission, which introduced modifications before submitting its favorable report.
The spokesperson for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the Senate, Moisés Ayala, who was part of that commission, assured that the initiative represents an important step within the police reform process promoted by the government of President Luis Abinader.

The legislator maintained that the transformation of the Police cannot be achieved immediately, because it is an institution with decades of operation and practices that require gradual changes through training and new regulations.
Ayala lamented the recent cases in which police officers have been involved in the deaths of citizens, although he described them as isolated incidents, while stating that the public’s trust in the institution has improved compared to previous years.
Likewise, he explained that among the modifications made to the project is the strengthening of police action protocols, prioritizing the use of non-lethal methods and leaving the use of firearms as a last resort during interventions.

The senator further indicated that the commission’s report has already been concluded and will be presented to the plenary, although he clarified that a possible approval in two consecutive readings will depend on the decision of the chamber.
