San Antonio, USA. French superstar Victor Wembanyama secured his future with the San Antonio Spurs by signing a five-year, $252 million contract extension, the maximum allowed for a player on a rookie contract, as reported by ESPN.

Although the franchise only confirmed that it is a multi-year renewal, the 22-year-old center sent a clear message to the fans after sealing the deal.
“I am here to stay. I will do whatever it takes,” Wembanyama expressed.
The Frenchman also posted a message addressed to the “Spurs family” on his social media, anticipating his continuity with the Texan organization.
A bet on the future
According to ESPN, the new contract includes a player option for the fifth season. Additionally, Wembanyama reportedly declined a “supermax” structure, which would have allowed him to earn a higher percentage of the salary cap, in order to accept a 25% increase and thus offer the Spurs greater financial flexibility to strengthen the roster.
The decision is reminiscent of similar moves made in the past by figures like Tim Duncan, who prioritized building competitive teams during his career in San Antonio.
