SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL. — Veteran Brazilian coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is in an intensive care unit (ICU) after being diagnosed with a lung infection, sources close to the coach reported this Friday.

Luxembourg, 73, was transferred to a medical center in the city of Palmas, capital of the state of Tocantins, after presenting health complications during the night. After performing various tests, the medical staff confirmed the infectious condition and determined his admission to intensive care, where he is currently receiving treatment with antibiotics.
The veteran strategist, who led the Brazilian national team between 1998 and 2000, has an extensive and successful career in the dugouts, being considered one of the most decorated coaches in Brazilian football.
Throughout a career spanning over four decades, Luxemburgo led important clubs such as Flamengo, Palmeiras, Santos, Cruzeiro, Atlético Mineiro, Grêmio, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama, in addition to having a brief international experience with Real Madrid in 2005.

His last stint as a coach was in 2023 with Corinthians, a team he managed for the third time before being dismissed after a string of adverse results.
In recent months, Luxembourg had begun to focus on his foray into politics, announcing his candidacy for the Senate for the state of Tocantins, which marked a new direction in his professional life.
