Santo Domingo.- Father’s Day brought dozens of people to the Máximo Gómez National Cemetery this Sunday, where they came to visit the graves of their fathers and husbands, some having passed away decades ago and others with more recent losses.
From early hours, family members arrived at the cemetery to clean the graves, place flowers, and remember those who, they assure, left important teachings and remain part of their lives despite their physical absence.
One of the visitors said that he has kept the tradition of going to his grandfather’s grave since 1990, while another assured that for the last 35 years he has not stopped visiting the place where his father’s remains rest.
The date was also used to remember those considered examples of life. Elcio Sánchez went to visit his father and grandfather and highlighted the legacy of his relatives, including his parents’ marriage, who remained together for more than 70 years.
“My dad was too good to me and that is why every year I come to visit his grave,” expressed Gregorio Amador, who explained that his father has been buried in the Máximo Gómez National Cemetery for 35 years and that, in addition, he periodically visits his mother’s grave.

The wives of deceased men also came to honor their memory. One of them remembered her husband, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage and who, as she recounted, was a “very good” man who accompanied her for a large part of her life.

Another visitor arrived to clean her husband’s grave and remembered that he was an exemplary man to his children and friends. In her view, although Father’s Day does not always receive the same recognition as Mother’s Day, she considers it important to take advantage of the date to value fathers and keep their legacy present.
During the day, some of the visitors also reflected on the importance of new generations valuing and respecting their parents, considering that family relationships have changed over time.

For these families, visiting the cemetery on Father’s Day represents a tradition that, in many cases, is not limited to this date. Some claim that they return throughout the year to maintain the bond with their loved ones and remember the values they passed on to them.
