NEW YORK (AP) — Driven by the market debut of his rocket company SpaceX, Elon Musk is now the world’s first trillionaire.
That level of wealth, owned by a single person, was previously unimaginable. Before Friday, the trillion-dollar mark was reserved for indicators such as GDP (or astronomical debt) of a handful of large economies and, only in the last decade, the value of some of the largest companies to have ever been publicly traded.
Musk’s new title comes amid an accelerating growth of the wealthiest. Year after year, their former (though now very distant) club of billionaires has added an increasing number of members, from tech titans to celebrities. Meanwhile, more and more people around the world are struggling to pay their daily bills. Many have criticized the arrival of the first trillionaire as the most recent and alarming example of this wealth gap.
The figure “one trillion” is difficult for the human mind to comprehend. One trillion dollars is a thousand times greater than one billion dollars. And a million times greater than one million dollars.

According to Forbes, Musk’s net worth reached $1.1 trillion on Friday, following SpaceX’s spectacular stock market debut. Most of that money is invested in stocks. Even so, here are some ways to reflect on the potential of a trillion dollars.
To the moon and back, more than 200 times.
Thinking about what a trillion dollars represents is almost as astronomical as the interplanetary goals —and, at this point, still far from becoming a reality— that SpaceX has set for itself.
In terms of physical money, a trillion US dollar bills placed one after another would reach a length of nearly 97 million miles (or almost 156 million kilometers). This would be equivalent to the distance of more than 200 round trips to the Moon, which according to NASA is at an average distance of 238,855 miles (almost 384,400 kilometers) from Earth. It would also exceed the approximate distance of 93 million miles (about 150 million kilometers) that separates the Earth from the Sun.
122 dollars for every person on Earth
According to the latest figures from the United States Census Bureau, there are currently almost 8.2 billion people living on Earth. If a trillion dollars were distributed among the entire population, each person would receive almost 122 dollars.
Doubling South Africa’s GDP
A trillion dollars is more than double the annual GDP of South Africa, the country where Musk was born. According to 2026 International Monetary Fund figures, the national production of goods and services amounts to almost 480 billion dollars.
Currently, only about 21 countries in the world have a GDP exceeding one trillion dollars. The United States and China lead the list with more than 32.38 trillion and 20.85 trillion dollars, respectively, figures far higher than those of most other economies.
2.5 million households in the United States
According to the latest figures from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the median sales price of houses in the United States is around $403,200. With one trillion dollars, you could buy almost 2.5 million homes at that price.
243 billion gallons of gasoline
At current U.S. gasoline prices—which averaged nearly $4.11 per gallon on Friday, according to AAA—$1 trillion could buy more than 243 billion gallons of regular fuel.
To put it in perspective, this figure far exceeds the nearly 137 billion gallons that Americans consumed in motor gasoline throughout all of last year. Furthermore, prices at gas stations were much lower in 2025. The high price of oil, stemming from the war that the United States and Israel are waging against Iran, pushed the national average above $4 per gallon for the first time in four years.
With a lead of more than 700 billion dollars over the second richest person in the world.
According to Forbes, the second richest person in the world today is Google co-founder Larry Page, whose net worth was nearly $294 billion as of Friday at noon. This represents $706 billion less than one trillion dollars.
In fact, the combined net worth, as of Friday, of the four men who follow Musk on Forbes’ list of the richest people—which, in addition to Page, includes fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin ($271 billion), Amazon’s Jeff Bezos ($249 billion), and Oracle’s Larry Ellison ($232 billion)—amounted to about $1.05 trillion.
Those fortunes can fluctuate by tens of billions of dollars a day, or even in a matter of hours. Musk’s net worth has soared. Last year, according to Forbes, his fortune amounted to $342 billion, up from $195 billion in 2024.
